Crème de la Corvallis: Week of July 12

Thursday, July 12

Jazz Jam

Bombs Away Café, 2527 NW Monroe Ave. 9 p.m. Free.

What’s a Jazz Jam, exactly? It’s when an awesome group of musicians bring a drum kit and some other stuff, then they play cool jazz stuff on it, and you (yes, you) can sign up and jump on in. This is a great event for both playing and listening! For info, visit: facebook.com/corvallisfunkandjazzjam.

Friday, July 13

Puppeteers for Fears presents, Cthulhu: the Musical

Majestic Theatre, 115 SW 2nd St., Corvallis7:30 p.m. $14-16.

Holy ^$@!. Excuse my symbols, but Puppets? Cthulhu? MUSICAL? Hold on a second, I need to go breathe into a bag or something, because this is the best thing ever. Let me confirm: This is indeed The Call of Cthulhu with puppets and a live band. A live band! Multimedia projections! Multimedia projections and puppets and a live band. Am I repeating myself? Twelve songs and an intermission are planned in the nearly two-hour running time. The press release says this is a comedic adaption of “one of the least musical or comedic stories ever.” Awesome kids are invited as well as adults (their words, not mine). For tickets visit: https://app.arts-people.com/index.php?show=86807

Saturday, July 14

Ben Mutschler Trio

Bombs Away Café, 2527 NW Monroe Ave., Corvallis. 8 p.m.

A trio of local jazz fanatics, hitting you with saucy tunes. Guitar, sax, and drums. I found this sweet performance from earlier this year at Cloud & Kelly’s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1J5Q_HObcm4. If that doesn’t sell you, nothing will!

Imagine Open Mic

Imagine Coffee, 5460 SW Philomath Blvd., Corvallis. 7-9 p.m.

Come for the coffee, stay for the open mic! Or come for the open mic and stay for the coffee. Or some variation on that. But seriously, their coffee is so damn good…

RUNA: Melodic Celtic Fusion

The Whiteside Theatre, 361 SW Madison Ave., Corvallis. 7 p.m. $20-$25.

The Whiteside Theatre and the Corvallis Folklore Society have teamed up to present this awesome event. Since 2008, Runa has been “pushing the boundaries of Irish folk music into the Americana and roots music formats.” And doesn’t that make perfect sense? What a fusion. Irish and Scottish folk mixed with bluegrass, flamenco, jazz, blues, and more. You can score yourself some tickets at Grassroots Bookstore, Corvallis Brewing Supply, or at https://runa.brownpapertickets.com/

GLIT, Swamp Meat, and Baywitch

Bombs Away Café, 2527 NW Monroe Ave., Corvallis. 9:30 p.m. $5

Swamp Meat (https://swampmeat.bandcamp.com/) and Baywitch (https://swampmeat.bandcamp.com/) are down from Seattle, cranking out different takes on psychedelic-surf-punk, or at least that’s what it sounds like to my ears. Personally, I’d just call it really *&$@! good. GLIT (https://we-are-the-glit-band.bandcamp.com) appears to be out of Eugene and adds a considerably raw, sludgy sound to an already incredible lineup. For more info visit, https://www.facebook.com/events/2150310381881866/ . But really, just go to the show.
