This year’s Corvallis City Council election has been intensely active by our fair burgh’s usual standards – three of nine members declined to seek reelection, and a fourth is leaving for higher office. But then, two of those open seats will be filled by newly elected candidates that ran unopposed.
And while all of that may be a little hard to keep track of, what seemingly focused everyone’s attention was the two open seats that were contested, and the four incumbents that had been met with challengers. That’s a total of six contested seats.
Buzz also came from five of the newly running candidates referring to themselves as both the Sunrise and Grassroots slate. They will take two of the open seats for which incumbents declined to run, Wards 4 and 6. Ava Olson ran unopposed for Ward 4, and another of the slate, Alison Bowden, ran for the open seat in Ward 6 against two unaffiliated challengers.
However, the slate candidates were unsuccessful in their three matchups with incumbents in Wards 1, 2 and 9.
At the County, two of the three Board of Commissioners positions were set to be decided with this election. Democrat Nancy Wyse sought a second term against two challengers, one a Pacific Green, the other a Republican. Democrat Gabe Shepherd ran unopposed in the general to fill the seat Xan Augerot will be vacating. The two County contests turned out just about how you would expect.
