In its 71st year, Benton County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Posse has a long tradition of dedicated members. As a volunteer organization, the men and women that comprise the mounted posse not only donate their time, but use their own horses and equipment to augment the Sheriff’s office, and are considered special deputies. Of the many roles they play in the community, one of the most valuable services they provide is Search and Rescue, for which posse members are on call 24/7.
Volunteer members are trained and certified in Search and Rescue by the Benton County Sheriff’s office. After their initial 100-hour-certification course, the volunteers and their horses complete at least 30 additional hours annually to maintain certification, and are CPR and First Aid certified – well the horses aren’t CPR certified, but you get the idea.
In addition to its impressive Search and Rescue efforts, the mounted posse holds and participates in a number of community events. Upcoming events include the 10th Annual Benton County Sheriff’s office Chili Cook-off at Benton County Fairgrounds September 10. The event has a $5 entry fee, which in part benefits Benton County Mounted Posse. Members of the posse will be on hand providing a demonstration with their horses. Among the posse’s other events this year is their 8th Annual Special Needs Ride, which serves children with special needs. The event is held October 28, also at the Benton County fairgrounds.
The value of these volunteers and their pets, dedicated to improving the quality and expanding the reach of Search and Rescue efforts, cannot be underestimated. These pets and their owners are a huge asset to the community and deserve support and thanks.
