The Arts Center this Month: Postcollapse and Wayfinding on Exhibit, Daily Sanctuary in last Few Days

As fall inexorably marches toward winter, The Arts Center, or TAC, brings forward two exhibits that are quite different from one another – and bids adieu to Angel Black’s Daily Sanctuary in the Corrinne Woodman Gallery. You have until Wednesday, November 6 to drop in for a viewing of Dark Sanctuary, and we think it’s worth your time.

Black’s exhibition invites you to reconsider your daily routines in the context of ritual and transformation. Through this exhibition, Black pulls you into her version of sanctuary using softly articulated figures and visceral sculptures. Her work challenges the line between routine and ritual, while exploring the deeply personal aspects of life that take place behind the closed doors. If you’re curious, Black sat down with TAC curator Jennie Castle for a conversation, which is on Spotify.

Also, as we pen this, a Show & Sell with artists’ reception is slated for this afternoon from 12 to 5 pm – but if you miss it, you can view and buy the next day, Saturday, over the same hours.

Here’s what’s happening for the rest of the month…

MAIN GALLERY: RePlay, MinEastry of Postcollapse Art and Culture

Guest Curator Vuslat D. Katsanis and The Arts Center present RePlay, an international contemporary art exhibition featuring work by Ilknur Demirkoparan, Naomi Middelmann, and Keoni K. Wright. The three artists, working across Suriname, Switzerland and Türkiye, recall and reinterpret historically complex material in critically innovative ways, and explore themes of repetition and reinterpretation to challenge the residual afterimages of colonialist representative traditions. CORRINE WOODMAN GALLERY: Wayfinding, Jess Eastburn

Jess Eastburn’s paintings examine the deluge of information that we are confronted with as a result of the digital technology which dominates every aspect of modern life. Though the works may appear as if they were created digitally, they are drawn out and painted entirely by hand, in a bid to imbue the digital age with a bit of humanity.  Eastburn’s Artist Talk precedes 2nd Saturday Art Day, which she will lead as a guest artist. • Runs November 8 – December 7, 2024
