Sunrise Corvallis is throwing a hat into the municipal ring, fielding five candidates for November’s Corvallis City Council election – all of whom will be on hand at Chintimini park at Noon on Sunday, August 25.
There will be speeches from the slate and local advocacy groups are invited to table, according to a release from the organizers.
“Whether you want to volunteer or are simply interested in speaking to the candidates, you are welcome,” said the release.
The slate of Sunrise Corvallis candidates includes:
- Beckett Hunt for Ward 1
- Ava Olson for Ward 4
- Alison Bowden for Ward 6
- Roy Rheuben for Ward 7
- Karen-Jean Canan for Ward 9
Sunrise Corvallis says their candidates, if elected, will focus on the climate crisis, housing, and humane supportive treatment of unhoused people. This is not the group’s first foray into Corvallis politics, having pushed a prior Corvallis City Council to pass a Green New Deal resolution, locally.
They say their goal now is to aim for a more progressive and generationally balanced council by running candidates in five wards they’ve recruited for.
About Sunrise Corvallis
Sunrise Corvallis, according to their website, is part of the National Sunrise Movement, a community of youth committed to winning the Green New Deal. While the Sunrise Movement tends to focus on national policy, the local Corvallis chapter has chosen to focus locally.
Their website says, “We are part of the youth-led climate revolution here in Corvallis. We are helping build community and radical hope for our futures through empowering youth and fighting for systemic climate and environmental justice. We are constantly growing and adapting, informed by science, compassion, and all the generations of activists that came before us.”
