Susan Rodgers, OSU writing and literature professor, will review Demon Copperhead: A Novel by Barbara Kingsolver, as part of the library’s Random Review series Wednesday, June 12 at 12:00 p.m. The program will take place in the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library’s Main Meeting Room.
Demon Copperhead is a loose re-telling of Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield. Set in contemporary Appalachia, it explores the effects of generational poverty on its protagonist Damon Fields, his single mother, and a wide cast of other characters.
Barbara Kingsolver is a journalist, science writer, essayist and multiple award-winning novelist. Published in 2022, the instant bestseller Demon Copperhead was co-recipient of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, and winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction.
Susan Jackson Rodgers is a professor of Creative Writing and Literature at Oregon State University and has served as the Associate Dean of the OSU Honors College since 2020. She is the author of the novel This Must Be the Place and two story collections: The Trouble With You Is and Ex-Boyfriend on Aisle 6. Her stories and essays have appeared in journals such as New England Review, Colorado Review, North American Review, Prairie Schooner, River Teeth, and Brevity. Susan is originally from Connecticut and New York City. She and her husband moved to Corvallis from Manhattan, Kansas, with their three (then school aged) children in 2008.
