Author Event: Jaclyn Moyer’s On Gold Hill: A Personal History of Wheat, Farming, and Family from Punjab to California. Main Meeting Room, Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, 645 NW Monroe Ave., Corvallis. 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. Free. Local writers Jaclyn Moyer and Sindya Bhanoo will lead a conversation in celebration of Moyer’s new book “On Gold Hill: A Personal History of Wheat, Farming, and Family from Punjab to California.” In 2012, 25-year-old Jackie Moyer — the daughter of a forbidden marriage between a white American father and a Punjabi American mother — embarked on a career in organic farming, setting up shop on 10 rented acres in Gold Hill, California. When a friend encouraged her to add an heirloom wheat called Sonora to her crop rotation — a strain whose roots can be traced back to Punjab — Moyer saw an opportunity to repair her fractured relationship to her Indian heritage. Braiding memoir with historical inquiry, Moyer maps her personal story atop the entangled histories of wheat cultivation and the rise of the organic farming movement to examine how industrial agriculture has harmed our relationship with food, the planet and each other. “On Gold Hill” explores the complexities of multiracial identity and the immigrant experience, illuminates the urgent need for a more just food system, and investigates what it means to lose — and to reclaim — one’s heritage. PRAx: OSU Wind Ensemble. Detrick Hall, 470 SW 15th Street, Corvallis. 7 p.m. Free, $10. The OSU Wind Symphony is an auditioned group in the music department at Oregon State University. It is comprised of undergraduate students and is open to students of any major. The group strives to bring masterworks of the genre to new audiences and explore works by emerging composers and compelling modern staples. The concept of the Wind Symphony as an ensemble dates to the interwar period, and was developed in the United States. Utilizing a part doubling and woodwind-heavy philosophy, the Wind Symphony instrumentation was designed to achieve a broad and powerful sound. Early pioneers of instrumentation commented on the weight and density of the sound, describing it as “the numbers of an orchestra, with the projection of wind instruments.” Many great works of the 20th century were written with this specific ensemble in mind.Visit https://prax.oregonstate.edu/events/osu-wind-symphony for more info.

Monty Python’s Spamalot. Majestic Theatre, 115 SW 2nd St., Corvallis. 7:30 p.m. $18 or $20. Monty Python’s SPAMALOT tells the legendary tale of King Arthur’s quest to find the Holy Grail. Spamalot retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and features a bevy of beautiful show folks, not to mention cows, killer rabbits, and French people. The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony® Awards, including Best Musical, and was followed by two successful West End runs. The outrageous, uproarious, and gloriously entertaining story of King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake will delight audiences as they search for the Holy Grail, while “always look on the bright side of life.” Visit https://app.arts-people.com/index.php?show=222083 for more info.
