The exhibition How to Carry Water brings together contemporary visual artists and humanities scholars in shared observations and questions about watersheds. In this expanded conversation, the term “watershed” refers not only to ecological structures, but also to the spatial, temporal and cultural entities that catalyze collectivity and life alongside bodies of water. The exhibition considers how the lenses of history, philosophy and creative practice allow for alternative methods of witnessing the human relationship to water. The quilts were presented as large-scale works of art — big pictures — and that’s when people really began to recognize the greatness of quiltmaking in America. Documenting Oregon’s Trail of Tears: Historic Photography. Corvallis Museum, 411 SW 2nd St., Corvallis. 10:30 am. Nolan Streitberger will share unique photos from his project documenting the history that led up to the removal of Native Americans from their homelands after the Rogue River War in 1856. Using technology from the 1850s known as wet plate collodion photography, Streitberger documented the trail using an antique wooden camera. Long Summer Days is a photo essay that follows Haley’s journey through childhood as she struggles with the boredom of living as a single child in the same small home where Streitberger grew up. These images include subtle undertones and rich metaphors that disrupt stereotypes of girls, while highlighting Haley’s delightfully unconsciousness strength, independence, defiance, and playfulness. The exhibition How to Carry Water brings together contemporary visual artists and humanities scholars in shared observations and questions about watersheds.
