Academy for Lifelong Learning: A Mystery Whale Uncovered off Oregon. Corvallis Community Center, 2601 NW Tyler Ave., Corvallis. 9:30 – 11:30 am. Most classes are also available remotely on Zoom. Membership required. Dues are currently $110 for a full year. Membership can start at any quarter. Presenter: Lisa Ballance, Director, OSU Marine Mammal Institute. Of the 94 currently recognized species of marine mammals worldwide, six have never been identified alive in the sea. All six belong to a single group (known as beaked whales). Although small by whale standards, they still are among the largest 0.001% of animals on Earth. A recent Marine Mammal Institute expedition sailed from Newport, Oregon and had an extraordinary encounter with a pair of beaked whales. During that encounter, a variety of data were collected, allowing the research team to identify them to species. They were Hubbs’ beaked whales and seen alive only once since the species was described in 1955 – off the coast of Oregon. Almost nothing is known about this species but our discoveries will allow us to learn much more about its range, movements, and status. This is local research with truly global impact.
