Corvallis Business: New Chamber President Announced, Living Studio to Expand, Coolidge to Crypto Examined, Your Business Events Calendar

Bruce Burris could be seen to walk in two distinct Corvallis worlds – but really, he’s successfully made these worlds one. Working at Corvallis’ CEI, he helped both the arts and business communities see the potential in giving the developmentally disabled space to create and produce – he then went on to Cornerstone Associates to build their Living Studio program.

Now he’s announced this arts and culture program that supports the neurodiverse will expand to Salem too.

“We already have some fun and amazing opportunities for creative folks. This November, we are hosting Patrick Hackleman as our artist in residence on Wednesdays. Patrick’s work has been written about in important art publications, and he has exhibited his art throughout the US,” said Burris. “We also have exciting news about upcoming workshops and events you can participate in at the Halle Ford Museum of Art and other local arts institutions.”

Initially, they are programming on Wednesdays 11 am to 3 pm, beginning November 1st., adding additional days and time as needed. Folks can visit the Salem location at 155 N. Liberty St., next to Reed Opera House, or they can set an appointment, if they prefer.

For more information, you can contact Burris at bburris@cornerstoneassoc.org, or call him at (541) 257-2139 Cornerstone Associates.

Notably, The Corvallis Advocate Most Impactful of the Year list included Burris for both 2016 and 2017.

New Corvallis Chamber President Announced: Come Monday, Oct. 30, Christine “Christy” Wood will take the reins at the Corvallis Chamber of Commerce.

Wood comes to Corvallis from Burnsville, North Carolina, where she has been serving the Yancey County Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and Visitor Center as Executive Director since 2020.

Current Interim President and CEO, Shalena Cordeaux, will be departing the Chamber on Friday, November 10th. “It has been my honor to serve our Chamber and our members over the last year both in an event management role and that of interim CEO, and I know with Christy’s guidance and leadership, the coming year will be one of growth and great success”, said Cordeaux.

She and the incoming president will be working together on the transition through the next month.

Former president Simon Date left at the end of May to accept a position at the Oregon Youth Soccer Association. Prior to leaving, Date served at the Chamber for four years.

An Examination of Our Country’s Financial History: Financial journalist and author Diana B. Henriques will speak about why financial history matters Nov. 8 at Oregon State University’s Corvallis campus as part of the Provost’s Lecture Series.

Her lecture, “Why Financial History Matters: From Coolidge to Cryptocurrency,” is a look at the road America has traveled since the “wild west” markets of the Jazz Age to reforms of the 1930s to the newest court cases confronting Wall Street’s watchdogs.

The talk is based on her latest book, “Taming the Street: The Old Guard, the New Deal and FDR’s Fight to Regulate American Capitalism,” which was published last month.

The lecture will take place at 7 p.m. at the LaSells Stewart Center. It is free to attend but registration is required. It will also be livestreamed at live.oregonstate.edu.

Following her talk, Henriques willbe joined by Tim Carroll, dean of Oregon State’s College of Business, who will moderate a question-and-answer discussion.

Henriques, who has written for the New York Times since 1989, investigates topics including investment and securities regulation, white-collar crime, corporate governance and market volatility.

Her investigation into financier Bernie Madoff, perpetrator of history’s biggest Ponzi scheme, an investment fraud that pays existing investors with funds collected from new investors, led her to write the New York Times bestseller “The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust.”

The book became the basis for the HBO film by the same name and the Netflix docuseries “Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street.” Detailing Madoff’s rise and fall during his decades-long $65 billion investment scam, the Netflix series jumped to a Top 10 most watched TV show upon release in January 2023.

Henriques has received multiple Pulitzer Prize nominations as well as top awards for business and finance journalism. An authority in historical precedents and investment behavior, she is regarded as a go-to expert on the effects of Sept. 11, 2001, on the financial community, the 2008 bank crisis and resulting Great Recession, and more recent headlines centered on U.S. wealth markets including cryptocurrency.

This lecture is the first in the 2023-24 Provost’s Lecture Series, which brings renowned thinkers, writers, scientists, artists and leaders to OSU to engage, challenge and inspire. Author Michael Pollan will be the next speaker on April 2, 2024. The series is presented by the Office of the Provost and the OSU Foundation.
