Corvallis Culture: Volcano Talk, Halloween Fun with Elks, Harvest Fest, Wine & Candy, & ‘Beetlejuice’

Learn More About Volcanoes: Once or twice every 1,000 years, high magnitude volcanoes erupt somewhere on Earth, causing devastation – take for example the eruption of Krakatau in 1883. On November 2, Dr. Kathy Cashman will be speaking about her research into the eruption of Mount Mazama which created Crater Lake and distributed ash over more than 1 million square km.

Cashman will talk about the work going into detecting the presence and evolution of magma as it comes into the subsurface, what triggers an eruption, and what can be done to control eruption styles and durations. This talk begins at 7:00 p.m. at the LeSells Stewart Center, located at 875 SW 26th St. The talk can also be watched virtually. Find registration information here.

A Peaceful Monday: Halloween is for finding new things, and one new thing you can find this Halloween is a wine you really like from Emerson Vineyards, located at 11665 Airlie Rd. in Monmouth – just a hop, skip, and a 30 minute drive north of Corvallis.

From 12:00-5:00 p.m. on October 31, if you show up to Emerson in costume you’ll get a free tasting. There will also be candy around, but you’ll have to figure out your snickers-merlot pairings for yourself.
