Higgins to Run For Commissioner Seat

Correction: In our original article, we said that Pat Malone was a Republican. He is a Democrat. This has been corrected.

Helen Higgins, currently the CEO for the Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis, has announced her intention to run in the May 17 Democratic primary election for the role of Benton County Commissioner against incumbent Pat Malone.

In a press release, Higgins stated this is the perfect time for her to make this move.

“Now is the right time for me to consider this career change,” she said. “I want to serve our communities more broadly to address the challenges we face due to COVID and capitalize on the opportunities that are coming as a result of the pandemic. I look forward to using my proven leadership skills, experience and energy to serve our County.”

She went on to talk about her love for Benton County and the community as a reason behind her choice to run in the upcoming election, adding, “I want to bring my business and community experience together to serve in a broader capacity.”

Higgins’s opponent, Malone, served on County committees for Law Enforcement Review, Charter Review, and Bicycle Advisory prior to taking on the role of Benton County Commissioner in 2018.

Requests for comment from Malone’s office were not returned prior to publishing.
