OSIFF Features LGBTQ Film by Corvallis Director

Local independent film director Davey Porter will be screening his feature film “Happy Endings Sleepover” at the Whiteside Theatre on January 11 as part of the Oregon State International Film Festival. The film adapts the first installment of the bestselling “Johnnie & Sander” series of LGBTQ novels by Cade Jay Hathaway.

“Happy Endings Sleepover” follows Johnnie Allen, a 20-year-old driver for the CIA. While stationed in Denmark, Johnnie falls in love with Danish boy Sander Lars Hansen, their romance unfolding against a backdrop of european Espionage and intrigue.

Porter was tapped to direct after editing one of Hathaway’s books — the author appreciated his editorial insight, and the two bonded over their shared love of Denmark.

As the book takes place over the course of a year, the film was shot in intervals to capture the natural beauty of Denmark during different seasons. This ultimately cut down production time, as much of the editing was done while waiting for the seasons to change. In total, it took Porter two years to bring “Happy Endings Sleepover” to life.

The film debuted at the San Antonio QFest this October, and will be shown concurrently at the Rainbow Umbrella Film Festival in London and OSIFF in Corvallis. Porter and actor Jeppe Fogsgaard, who plays Johnnie, will be appearing at the Whiteside Theatre for a Q&A session after the show.

“Happy Endings Sleepover” has proven to be a smash hit on Amazon Prime Video, netting 3 million total unique streams and 60 reviews in a span of 12 weeks. A sequel, “Sander’s Courage,” has been greenlit, and will start filming in Denmark, Spain, and the Czech Republic this Spring.

Porter told the Advocate “every gay kid out there needs to see this film to know that eternal, loyal love is not only possible, but that it is his or her right. And that there are more people who support them in this world, than don’t. It is a sweet, hopeful film on what it’s like to try and measure up and exceed others’ expectations, while making sure that you don’t lose who you are while you’re doing it.”

“Happy Endings Sleepover” will be screening at the Whiteside on Saturday, January 11 at 2 P.M. Tickets are priced at $5 – $8 and are available in advance at www.eventbrite.com, and at the box office on the day of the show.
