CitySpeak Livestream: Wildfire Experts to Talk Trends, Management, Controversies

How bad will wildfire seasons get as the climate changes? Does climate change play a role in making arson caused fires worse? What, if anything, can be done in terms of forest management? 

Panelists include:  

  • Prof. John Bailey, from OSU’s College of Forestry – his areas of research include forest health, wildfire ecology, and silviculture 
  • Corvallis Fire Chief Ken McCarthy our local department is known throughout the Pacific Northwest for its strong volunteer program that has mentored dozens of future firefighters who have gone on to serve communities around the country 
  • Daniel Leavell, OSU College of Forestry Associate Professor, Fire Specialist 

According to the Insurance Information Institute, 230,000 acres have burned in Oregon this year, and 40,000 residents were displaced.  The same organization disclosed its finding that Oregon is among 10 states at most risk for wildfires.
