Oregon Republican Senators announced they will return to Salem on Saturday, June 29, after successfully “[killing] cap and trade,” according to Senate Minority Leader Herman Baertschiger (R-Grants Pass).
They will return to the Senate with roughly 48 hours remaining before the scheduled end of the session on Sunday, June 30 at 11:59 pm. Senate President Peter Courtney (D-Salem) begged the minority party to return earlier this week in an announcement on Tuesday in which he also stated that House Bill 2020, Oregon’s cap and trade plan, did not have enough votes.
Even after this announcement, Republicans refused to return until Governor Kate Brown rescinded an order to have the Oregon State Police to remand Republicans back to the Capitol.
They remained on the lam for the rest of the week, and now return to “vote on budget bills and other priorities for conservatives,” a likely sign they intend to spend the weekend picking and choosing which bills they will allow the Democrats to pass.
