Oregon Stops Using Federal Family Planning Dollars

Oregon will no longer use federal Title X money for family planning clinics, according to Oregon Health Authority Director, Patrick Allen. A new Trump administration rule blocks Title X funding from going to programs that tell women that abortion is one of their reproductive options.

Why This Happened, What’s the Effect

Oregon is the lead plaintiff in a federal lawsuit challenging the new gag rules concerning abortion. Since filing the suit in July, the state had stopped using federal funds in its clinics and had asked the federal Department of Health and Human Services to allow Oregon to remain a Title X recipient, so long as the state didn’t use any of the money until the case is decided.

Last week, DHS said no. The state says funding is in place to continue offering reproductive services.
