Does our fair burg need a new klink with triple the capacity of the current stir? Two debate dates have been set to examine the $25 million question going before voters this November. Both are free-of-charge opportunities for attendees to question Benton County Sheriff Scott Jackson, Presiding Benton County Circuit Court Judge David B. Connell, and Citizens Against a New Jail chairman David Grappo.
City Club of Corvallis will be moderating the discussions. The first is slated for noon on Monday, Sept. 21 at the Boys & Girls Club gym and the second is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the Majestic Theatre.
Currently, Benton County leases half of its jail beds from outside the area. The Sheriff’s office believes that housing all county inmates in one local facility will improve public safety. They are also seeking to offer inmates a chance at help with mental health and substance abuse issues while they are incarcerated. Notably, the Sheriff’s Department currently provides some released inmates housing and counseling in an effort to curb recidivism.
