The Arts Center is juxtaposing sculpture and paint under the title Narrative of Exploration. Portland-based artists Owen Premore and Nancy Helmsworth are sharing their respective gifts with Corvallis at the Arts Center.
Premore’s work utilizes found objects and metal and wooden gadgets. He provides the narrative of days past. Look for old technology and materials rescued from oblivion to spark your imagination. These are kinetic pieces, and temptingly tactile by design. He prefers to work with found objects.
“I feel that this nostalgia simultaneously gives the art piece innocence and strength,” he said.
Helmsworth’s paintings hearken faintly back to Victorian times. She was inspired by ancient deep sea exploration vehicles and the people who manned them. Her exhibit takes the viewer on a surreal journey through bizarre landscapes and hints to its creator’s own inner world.
“They are simultaneously personal revelations and memories. They are what is in my artist mind!” she said.
Narrative of Exploration can be seen at the Arts Center from Thursday, July 10 through Saturday, Aug. 16, with a reception on Thursday, July 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. A special brown bag art talk will be held on Thursday, July 17 at noon. The Art Center is located at 700 SW Madison Avenue and is open Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.theartscenter.net.
