Local roller derby league Sick Town Derby Dames’ S*M*A*S*H* Unit took on Eugene’s Church of Sk8in’ at the Linn County Fairground on Saturday, April 13th, for a hard-fought bout that ultimately led to the Church’s victory. SMASH started off strong, at one point leading 102-48; but after halftime the Church dominated the track while SMASH skaters rotated through the penalty box. Throughout the bout the point spread swung wildly, thanks to several 29-point power jams, courtesy of SMASH’s Hot Boxxx and Ill Ninja, and Church’s (and formerly Sick Town’s) lightning-on-skates, Jala Pain Yo.
Sick Town’s junior league, the Candy Stripers, debuted in a mini intra-league bout before the main action. Fans cheered hard for Albany/Corvallis’ first junior derby bout, where (temporary teams) the Black Pearls took on the Queens of Hurt, winning 116 to 68.
