Jack Compere, or “the guy that does those toons that used to be in The Advocate, The Alchemist, and the Gazette-Times,“ has been at it again with his personal brand of dry, biting commentary that sometimes leaves you stuck in the gut without even noticing the trail of blood until it’s too late. Wait, was that too morbid? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, I’m all hopped up on his newer toons, I’ve just torn my pants off, and Jack’s not here to stop me.
Two issues thus far have been released of his most recent effort, a magazine titled The Whispering Tube. Found alongside a series of postcards in downtown’s Studio 262, you can pick them up for only $4 a piece, a price point at which Compere is still losing money on the investment. Studio 262 has the only copies in town, making it quite fancy and exclusive, though Compere told me that this approach was largely due to the fact that nobody else would respond to his emails. I actually don’t plan on responding to that email, so it must be something in the water.
I’ve personally been a fan of Compere’s sophisticated humor for a long time and feel quite comfortable saying that if you’re looking for something well-crafted and different within this realm, you now know where to get it. When asked when Issue 3 will be out, Compere just said, “I like the arrangement better where I send my comics to someone who prints them and then pays me, so it’s all up in the air at this point.”
