Every once in a while there’s a band that’s a lot classy and a little bit weird. In that department, Portland-born Shanghai Woolies take the cake, frosting and the candles, too. With a mixture of the hot jazz spilling out of New York City and Chicago in the twenties and thirties, their performances treat the audiences to sounds steeped in the likes of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and the great Louis Armstrong. An eight piece ensemble formed by Gavin Bondy of another Portland favorite, Pink Martini, it simply doesn’t get more authentic – or fun.
The show starts at 7:30pm on October 25th. Tickets will be $12-14 and can be had online via The Majestic’s website, http://www.majestic.org/the-shanghai-woolies/. To get a taste of the band, visit their http://www.shanghaiwoolies.com/. And don’t forget to check YouTube for some live performances!
