Last month, May 17 to 19, Eugene hosted its annual Big O roller derby tournament, a three-day, flat-track roller derby event featuring junior derby, men’s derby, co-ed bouts, and sanctioned WFTDA bouts—WFTDA is the women’s flat track regulating body, which ranks teams from all over the world according to the outcomes of their sanctioned bouts. Our local travel team, S*M*A*S*H* Unit of the Albany/Corvallis league the Sick Town Derby Dames, climbed the ranks 18 spots to 102nd team in the world.
S*M*A*S*H* Unit bouted all three days of the Big O, taking on Slaughter County (#89), Humboldt (#74), and Treasure Valley (#50). You can see our team in action this Saturday at 6 p.m., when S*M*A*S*H* Unit takes on Emerald City’s (#84) Andromedolls in the “Summer of Shove.” Fans will be pleased to hear that Sick Town’s star jammer, Stitches ‘n Bones, has recovered from the knee injury that kept her off the track for five months and will be skating this bout.
Venue: Linn County Fairgrounds, 3700 Knox Butte Road. Doors open at 5 p.m.; bout starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are available for $10 at www.brownpapertickets.com, or for $13 at the door. Sick Town’s bouts are family-friendly events, with a kids’ crafting table and a fun, participatory halftime for the little ones. Kids under five are free.
