The Sick Town Derby Dames are kicking off the New Year by cracking their league down the middle and pitting Sick Town against Sick Town in their latest bout, Feb. 2’s Uncivil War: Black vs. Blue.

Come to the Linn County Fair and Expo in Albany (tickets are $13 at the door, doors open at 5 p.m., and action starts just after 6 p.m.) to see Team Blue take on Team Black in a bout that will debut newer skaters and give the audience an idea of who to keep an eye on in the coming season. Members of the ultra-strong travel team, S*M*A*S*H Unit, will be teamed up with more junior skaters, for some of whom the Uncivil War will be their first chance to flex their skills in a bout.

“Adding in some fresh blood and perspective [will] give us an edge on the competition,” says S*M*A*S*H Team Captain, Pwnface Killa.

It will also be the league’s first bout incorporating the new rules set by the sport’s largest regulating body, the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), which, most notably, has removed all minor penalties. Returning fans will also notice that jams will start with one whistle blast, instead of separate whistles for blockers and jammers.

The teams will reunite in a grudge match in December for the season closer, so whether Team Black or Team Blue wins on Feb. 2, they’ll have to work hard and stay strong to hold their title as winners come winter.

If the Uncivil War doesn’t slake your Sick Town thirst, head on down to Eugene on Feb. 9 to watch S*M*A*S*H Unit take on Emerald City’s Flat Track Furies at the Lane Events Center-Exhibit Hall. Visit www.sicktownderbydames.com for more information.
